Hotmail account compromised and sending out adware emails help!?

My girlfriend has had her hotmail account compromised with some kind of a virus/adware program which sends out emails to everyone in her address book inviting them to go to some crappy website and it just looks as if the emails are from her which is obviously quite embarassing.


But it also then deletes all the contacts from her address book and she has to enter them again manually at which point it sends these stupid emails out again.


Does anyone have any advice or experience with a similar issue? She is on a mac (the old white laptop ones, so i think probably pre os X but not sure).. also she obviously needs to get some antivirus so can anyone recommend a free one for macs? (I know thats 2 questions!!)

It's more likely that she has a worm on her computer. Update and run any virus software and just in case, change her password for her hotmail account.

You'll have to do a bit of hunting to find free av software for the mac.
